This is the true golden form of Phyllostachys aurea (which is badly named 'Golden Bamboo'). New culms emerge green but gradually age to a golden yellow or orange gold. Similar to the original form, it produces compressed and distorted internodes which can also provide an interesting ornamental effect.
Phyllostachys aurea 'Holochrysa' tends to have a smaller stature and usually not as fast spreading as the original form. Good exposure to sunlight will produce the most vivid colour. Culms grow very rigid and upright. Shortened internodes on the lower portion of the culms produce a higher density of branches closer to the ground. Cold, heat and drought tolerance makes it versatile and low maintenance. Another great choice for a 'golden' culmed screen or hedge.
