Featured Bamboo (July) - Fargesia rufa (Dragon Head Bamboo)
For the month of July, we would like to showcase one of our most popular bamboos at the nursery... Fargesia rufa. If one is looking for a shorter growing bamboo, 'Rufa' is the bamboo. Only averaging 6-8' (1.8 - 2.4m), 'Rufa' is best suited for applications that require a short screen with dense foliage. It has a non-invasive root system. Exceptional cold hardiness. Both sun and shade tolerant. In China, it is known as the 'Dragon Head Bamboo'.
Great Green Screen - One of the most noticeable aspects of 'Rufa' is that the culms grow very close together, producing nice dense clumps that are almost solid. Grown in the ground, this bamboo can reach heights of 6-8' (1.8 - 2.4m) here in the Pacific Northwest. Quite similar in height to your average yard fence.
Exceptional Cold Hardiness - Native to the southwestern provinces of China, Fargesia rufa grows at elevations of 5000 to 7200 feet (1500 to 2200m) so it is naturally use to cold climates. It is hardy to -23°C (-10°F). More than perfect for any condition here in the greater Vancouver area. Bring on the wind chill!!
Clumping Bamboo - Fargesia rufa has a non-invasive root system. New growth always emerges around the circumference of the main grove. It's clumping characteristic makes it's growth habit predicatable. This makes maintenance that much easier. Unlike a running bamboo, you won't need to be concerned about random new culms growing in random spots all over your garden.
Shade & Sun Tolerant - In it's natural growing environment, Fargesia rufa typically grows on the easterly slopes giving it morning sun and afternoon shade. Although this condition will give the most optimum growth, it thrives almost as well in full sun. It's tolerance of both shade and sun makes it very versatile for many garden and landscape conditions.
Excellent Container Bamboo - Grows fairly dense with minimal space requirements making it perfect for planters on balconies and patios. It's root system is not as aggressive as running bamboos so therefore it can last much longer in planters before needing to be repotted or divided.
The versatility of this bamboo makes it very ideal for the everyday landscape in the Pacific Northwest, whether its for your yard or planter.Fargesia rufa is currently available in 5gal sizes.
